New Ulm Medical Center announces 2008 Legends Award winners

NEW ULM, Minn.  11/07/2008--The New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) announced Wednesday, Nov. 5 that Otto Seifert, MD, and Milton Kaiser, MD, were chosen as the winners of the 2008 Legends Award.

Dr. Milton Kaiser and Dr. Otto Seifert were recipients of the 2008 Legends Award at New Ulm Medical Center this week. Present at the awards announcement were (l-r) Mary and Dr. Milton Kaiser, Dr. Seifert’s granddaughter Ellen Vancura, MD, and Dr. Seifert’s son Jim and his wife Jane Seifert.

Dr. Seifert was honored posthumously. He started his medical practice in New Ulm in 1912 and continued here for 52 years. “In those days, a physician did everything from delivering babies to performing surgery,” said NUMC President Lori Wightman. “In fact, Dr. Seifert was the first Fellow of the American College of Surgeons to practice in New Ulm.”

During World War I, Dr. Seifert was also commander of the U.S. Hospital Train in France.

Seifert’s son, Jim., practiced dentistry for many years in New Ulm and his granddaughter, Ellen Vancura, MD, is currently a physician at the New Ulm Medical Center. Dr. Jim Seifert, his wife Jane and Dr. Vancura attended the Legends Award announcement.

Dr. Kaiser has long since retired as a physician at NUMC, but still resides in New Ulm and remains active in the community. Kaiser was one of the honorary co-chairs of NUMC’s surgery capital campaign earlier this year. “Whether it was helping the community through the polio epidemic or bringing the two hospitals (Union and Loretto) together, Dr. Kaiser provided leadership within this community spanning four decades,” Wightman said. “He’s a lifelong learner dedicated to his profession, our medical center and this community.”

Previous Legends Award winners include: Frank Carthey, MD and Ruth Wold, RN in 2004; Fr. Alexander Berghold, Larry Ringhofer, MD, and Evie Hacker, RN in 2005; Connie Peterson, RN and Mary Johannek, LPN in 2006; and Kenneth Dirlam, MD in 2007.
